BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The Ridge High School field hockey team is scheduled to open its revamped, abbreviated 2020 regular season on Thursday, Oct. 1 at North Hunterdon High School in Annandale.
The Red Devils will be counting on strong midfield play as they hope to build on the success of a 16-6-1 season in 2019.
"We have a core group of returners this season who experienced winning a sectional title in 2019," Ridge field hockey coach Kimberly Clark said. "Those players will help develop our younger, less experienced athletes, and I am optimistic about another run at a sectional title."
Clark will build around a midfield that includes seniors Taylor Ligozio and Kate Pesarchick, junior Maggie Neuman and sophomore Kiera Ligozio.
"Our strength is certainly through the midfield this season," Clark said. "A year ago, we were struggling early on to find the right combination of players to support our attack and recover defensively, but we have a great deal of experience and talent in our midfield this year."
The attacking third suffered a blow when the team learned that junior Julie Narleski would miss this season recovering from an ACL injury. Senior Zoe McGowan will lead the attacking third. Other experienced players for Ridge are senior goalkeeper Emma Albee and junior defender Clare Guliano. Clark calls Albee "one of the best goalkeepers in the state."
"Emma didn't start playing goalkeeper until her sophomore year," Clark said. "She has worked so hard to hone her craft and was a big reason why we won a state title in 2019. 2020 will definitely be a huge season for her, and she will be a very fun (keeper) to watch."
Clark is looking forward to the possible contributions that newcomers Sana Hathorne, a freshman attack, and Felicia Milligan, a sophomore defender, could provide for the team.
