BASKING RIDGE, NJ - The Ridge girls soccer team, which opened its pre-season scrimmage slate this week, has shown promising offensive progress in the early going.

Ridge has reached the Group 4 state championship game in each of the last two seasons. While last year's title quest was made on the backs of a tremendous team defensive effort, Ridge's offensive attack was inconsistent during the post-season.

So far this summer, the offense has displayed more firepower. Ridge defeated Morristown, 3-1, on Tuesday, then knocked off Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 3-2, on Thursday in a rematch of last year's Section 2, Group 4 championship game. Ridge advanced past SPF in that game on PKs after the two teams battled to a scoreless tie.

Kaitlyn Arrigan, Sam Weyrauch and Zoe Mitzner each scored goals in the scrimmage against Scotch Plains, with Mitzner's goal breaking a 2-2 tie with 25 minutes left in the second half.

Ridge continues its scrimmage schedule with a Friday afternoon game at Somerville, and home matches next Wednesday at 4 p.m. against West Morris Central and at 10 a.m. Friday against Kearny.

The regular season begins on Thursday, Sept. 7 at home against defending state champion Hunterdon Central.
