BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Ridge broke out to a four-goal lead in the first period and went on to a 9-1 ice hockey victory over Newton in the first round of the NJSIAA Public A state tournament on Monday.

John Vilade, Rich McKenna, Drew Berger and Alex Konovalov each scored a goal in the opening period to help Ridge (21-2-4) open a 4-0 lead. Gary Prince finished with three goals and an assist.

Vanny Charleson and John Mandala also scored goals for the Red Devils, and Marc DelGaizo, Liam Tormey, Vilade and Charleson each contributed two assists.

Two Ridge goalies split time, with Chris Ambrozy turning away seven shots and Michael Mastrangelo making five saves.
