BEDMINSTER, NJ - The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House have elected Karen Sweeney, of the Gladstone section of Peapack-Gladstone, to serve a three-year term on its Board of Trustees.

Sweeney has had a 22-year career as an elementary and special education teacher. She currently teaches fourth and fifth grade students in the Manville School District.

A graduate of Boston College with a B.A. in Elementary and Special Education, she also is a former member of the Somerset County Library Advisory Board.  She is also an active member of St. Brigid’s Church in Peapack, where she sings on the choir and formerly taught CCD classes.

“We are delighted to welcome Karen to our board,” commented Craig Sutherland, President of The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House Board of Trustees. “Her background in elementary education will be a tremendous asset as we expand our educational programming and develop classroom space for our future barn.  In recent years, Karen has introduced more than 135 children from the Manville School District, alone, to the Revolutionary War history associated with the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum.”

About The Jacobus Vanderveer House

The Jacobus Vanderveer House served as headquarters for General Henry Knox during the winter of 1778-79 and is the only surviving building associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment, now recognized as America’s first military training academy and the precursor to The United States Military Academy at West Point. The Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum interprets Dutch colonial life in America as well as the stay by General Knox and his family during the 1778-79 encampment.  A National and New Jersey Historic Site, the Jacobus Vanderveer House is a true landmark that offers a vivid look into the history of our country and the lives of those who made it.

Operated by The Friends of The Jacobus Vanderveer House, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the House is located at 3055 River Road and can be accessed via River Road Park. The Friends sponsor public events throughout the year; for directions and more information, visit www.jvanderveerhouse.org. The Friends of the Jacobus Vanderveer House received an operating support grant from the state's New Jersey Historical Commission.
