Somerset Hills YMCA Swim Team has Record-Breaking Short Course Season

BASKING RIDGE, NJ - In April, Somerset Hills YMCA (SHY) Swim Team Parent Organization celebrated the team’s 2017-2018 season with its annual Awards Banquet held at the Westin Governor Morris in Morristown. The event celebrates swimmers and the contributions of coaches and parents. This year, the team had quite a few record-breaking accomplishments to be proud of.

As a charitable organization, Somerset County YMCA’s cause is to strengthen community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Y seeks to support parents in providing all children and teens with resources and opportunities to fulfill their potential. Somerset Hills YMCA’s Swim Team helps kids to develop endurance, skill, physical ability and mental stamina through a supportive and wholesome social outlet that encourages excellence, teamwork and camaraderie.

This spring, Somerset Hills YMCA sent nine swimmers to Eastern Zone Swimming Short Course Championships in Webster, New York. The Zones team broke 9 team record times and earned 13 medals. Kenny Barnicle finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:27.13.

Eighteen swimmers competed at YMCA Short Course National Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina and came home with top-8 finishes in all 5 relays. The boys 400 yard freestyle relay made up of Lucas Scheidl of Mendham, Victor Vollbrechthausen of Westfield, Jon Hua of New Providence and Jack Alexy of Mendham finished first, breaking the national record and the New Jersey state record with a time of 3:00.37. The boys 800-yard freestyle relay comprised of Lukas Scheidl, Billy Fallon of Warren, Jack Alexy and Victor Vollbrechthausen finished second and broke the New Jersey state record with a time of 6:38.93. Notably, Jack Alexy finished first in the 100-yard freestyle, second in the 50-yard free and third in the 200 yard backstroke. The boys 200-yard freestyle relay made up of Jack Alexy, Jon Hua, Ryan Carkhuff of Chester and Roo Fenton of Boonton finished first.

“I’m so impressed by the commitment of our athletes, their families and coaches to sportsmanship, teamwork and excellence,” said David M. Carcieri, president and CEO of Somerset County YMCA. “Their hard work and self-discipline will surely take them far in the sport and in life.”

Somerset Hills YMCA Swim Team has over 250 swimmers between the ages of 7 and 18. The team is led by ASCA and USA Swimming certified professional swim coaches and competes year-round in YMCA and USA-sanctioned meets.
