BERNARDS TWP., NJ - Summer, and the strongest sun of the year, has arrived, and the Bernards Township Health Department is hosting skin cancer screenings as one reminder to get professionally checked to catch any skin cancers early.

Screenings scheduled for July

The Bernards Health Department, serving six member towns, has scheduled skin cancer screenings for Monday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 18.

This screening, with a suggested donation of $10, is being offered to local residents aged 18 years and older, who are not currently under the care of a dermatologist, and who have not attended a Bernards Township Skin Cancer Screening in the past.

The screening exams will be conducted by a board certified dermatologist, and will include a full body exam, and prevention information in conjunction with the guidelines from the American Academy of Dermatology, according to the health department. All participants will receive a copy of their screening results.

The screenings will take place at the Fellowship Village Wellness Center off Allen Road in the Liberty Corner section of Bernards Township between 3 to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 10, and from 2 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18.

According to Bernards Health Officer Lucy Forgione, “Research shows that each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma accounts for only a small percentage of skin cancers, but it’s much more likely to grow and spread to other parts of the body, where it can be hard to treat."

Melanoma is almost always curable when it’s found in very early stages, Forgione added.

Pre-registration is required

Pre-registration is required and can be made at the Bernards Township Health Department at 262 S. Finley Ave. in Basking Ridge, or by phone at 908-204-2520.

The Bernards Township Health Department is a Contractual Health Agency serving Bernards Township, Bernardsville Borough, Chester Borough, Long Hill Township, Mendham Borough, and Peapack and Gladstone Borough. For more information, call 908-204-2520 or visit
