BERNARDS TWP., NJ _ Fall could be the most beautiful time of year to ride a horse, and even novice riders have a chance to sign up for a guided trail ride on horseback throughout the property at Lord Stirling Stable in Basking Ridge on an upcoming Sunday afternoon.

The Somerset County Park Commission's riding facility, located at 256 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge, is offering an introductory English-style horseback ride from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30. Registration already is in progress online and at the Stable office and will continue through Thursday, September 27, 2018, as space permits. 

Participants will receive a brief group lesson with one of Lord Stirling Stable’s riding instructors, to be followed by a one-hour guided trail ride through the open space of Lord Stirling Park.

The Introductory Ride offers an opportunity for novices to sample a trail ride on horseback and help decide if they enjoy the experience. It is also a great “refresher” for those who have not ridden in a long time. The county stable offers multiple sessions of riding lessons at varying levels and for adult and junior riders throughout the year.

The ride is scheduled to take place rain or shine. Heavy downpour or hazardous weather conditions may result in cancellation of the event.

Youth and adults who weigh less than 200 lbs. and are at least 9 years of age are eligible to participate. Riders between 9 and 18 years old must be registered by a parent or legal guardian. Participants age 9 to 11 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the ride. 

A certified equestrian helmet and shoes or boots with hard, smooth soles and a definite heel are required and may be borrowed from the Stable for the ride.  

Fee is $40 for county residents, $50 for out-of-county participants

The fee for the ride is $40 for Somerset County residents and $50 for out-of-county residents.  Preregistration is required with payment made by cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover is required at the time of registration.

Lord Stirling Stable is located within Lord Stirling Park in the Basking Ridge section of Bernards Township, and is encompassed within 500 acres of the western portion of the Great Swamp Basin of the Passaic River. The stable features a large indoor ring, three outdoor rings, daily Lead Line pony rides, and 18 miles of beautiful trails.
