Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of NJ Changes Name, Continues Commitment to Its Mission, Works

Credits: UU FaithAction NJ

SUMMIT, NJ - The Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of New Jersey hast a new name -- Unitarian Universalist FaithAction New Jersey (UU FaithAction NJ) -- along with an accompanying new logo, along with updated mission and vision statements and upgraded social media platforms.

The seven-year-old statewide organization announced the changes and developments at its recently held Fall Issues Conference, a gathering that focuses on legislative and advocacy priorities around Criminal Justice Reform, Immigration, Reproductive Justice, Gun Violence Prevention, Environmental and Economic Justice task forces. Nearly 100 people participated in the conference.

"The new name, logo- -- and, as of January 2018, an upgraded website -- are all part of the continued growth and development of our 200-plus year commitment to furthering social justice and compassionate action here in the Garden State," said Reverend Rob Gregson, UU FaithActioin NJ Executive Director.

Based out of offices housed at the Beacon UU Congregation in Summit, UU FaithAction NJ has strived to "lead the way on issues ranging from equal marriage rights for gay and lesbian New Jerseyans, environmental justice work that connects systemic racism and environmental degradation, and a risk-based (and not solely wealth based) bail system for persons suspected of a crime."

"After seven years of formal existence, UUs -- though a relatively small group among the major religious denominations here in NJ -- like to believe we make a disproportionate difference. We can call on a progressive social legacy that calls us to do more: for the abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, full civil rights for Americans of color, and most recently championing LGBT rights," says Reverend Gregson, adding, "Our religious understanding is that, though our individual beliefs may differ on Ultimate Reality, what brings us and keeps us together in the end are core values based on freedom of conscience, acts of compassion and making room at the table for everyone with a claim on being there.  What we have learned time after time is that there is almost always more room at that table, and we are excited to keep working to ensure space is made available in this world, now."
