SOMERVILLE, NJ  - Pac Man, Pokemon, Superman, Spiderman, the Caped Crusader and a bevy of super heroes and virtual characters are stepping up to support the Somerville Policemen’s Benevolent Association #147.

YESTERcades Video Arcade, 29 Division St., will host a 12-hour fund raiser for the PBA, offering discount hourly and daylong tickets on Sunday, Aug. 13, from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.

Open to all ages, the fundraiser offers a deep discount to gamers. The hourly rate is reduced from $8.50 to $7.50. The day rate is $15, reduced from the normal $25 day rate; 50 percent of the money spent will be donated to the PBA, according to Patrolman David Chuddy, president.

“You must say you’re with the PBA in order for us to get credit,” Chuddy said.

Gamers will have full access to the arcade’s attractions, which include dozens of console games, pinball machines, pool tables, knock hockey and other video games.

This is the second year the arcade and the PBA have joined together; last year, the event raised $700 for the PBA, according to Chuddy.

“It was real successful for us, so we’re back for a second round,” Chuddy said.

The PBA holds other fund raisers during the year, including the 5th annual Oct. 13 Dinner and Comedy Show at the Manville VFW; all monies raised go back into the community, according to Chuddy.

“We use the money for different things; the majority goes out as donations to other places,” he said. “We support other PBAs and the families of police officers, cops who are injured in the line of duty, but we try to keep it as local as we can.

“Sometimes we get requests from the community to help a sick relative pay medical expenses, we’ll throw some money in that direction,” Chuddy said.

The PBA also offers scholarships to students at Somerville High School and immaculate High School and will donate money to help students go on class trips that might not be able to afford it otherwise.

The past few years, the PBA has purchased turkeys and donated them to needy families for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“That’s something we’ll continue to do,” Chuddy said.

The PBA also supports the Special Olympics with a donation, and supports two of its members, Officer Tim Franks and Officer Vito Spadea who cycle 300 miles each May in the Unity Tour to Washington DC with hundreds of other police officers from New Jersey.
