I follow politics closely and I usually enjoy election season. Like most people, the one thing I am always sick of by this time of year is the negative political ads. I am used to seeing these types of ads for state and federal elections but I have never seen personal attack ads for our Bernards Township election until this year. I am disheartened and disappointed that the local Democratic candidates have stooped so low as to attack their opponents with negative ads. I have always respected how the local candidates took the high road and stuck to the issues that mattered to our residents without getting into personal attacks. It’s nice to see that both Jim Baldassare and Kate Grochala have continued this practice in spite of the recent attacks launched against them on social media ads that were paid for by Chadda and Sandler. I think that the Democrats’ approach to advertising this year speaks volumes about the character of both Sophia Chadda and Jon Sandler. They clearly want to win at any cost and I find that appalling! I can’t imagine that they will win over a single voter with such nasty ads about our friends and neighbors.
These petty attack ads have called into question the integrity of two people that I am honored to call my personal friends. I have known both Jim Baldassare and Kate Grochala for many years. Jim and Kate are two of the most kind and generous people I have ever met. They are true public servants who have a long history of serving our community. Jim is our current Mayor and he has done a tremendous job of leading our community during a very challenging year. He is also a Marine veteran who has dedicated his life to helping others. He is certainly well-qualified to continue to lead our town on the Township Committee.
Kate is an attorney and she brings valuable experience from working as Chief of Staff for Assemblywoman Denise Coyle. She will be a welcome addition to our Township Committee. Anyone who spends five minutes with Kate can feel the love and warmth she brings to every interaction she has with others. In fact, I personally witnessed Kate’s usual gracious manner at Harry Dunham Park during the 9/11 ceremony when she introduced herself to both Sophia Chadda and Jon Sandler. Kate treated them with kindness and respect as she wished them well. It’s really a shame that they could not be equally respectful in their social media ads.
I have already voted and I was proud to cast my vote for both Jim Baldassare and Kate Grochala for Bernards Township Committee. I voted for them because they are strong fiscal conservatives who are dedicated to keeping our town 100% debt-free. Jim and Kate are real leaders with the experience we need to keep our town the wonderful community I have had the privilege of calling “home” for the past 14 years. I hope others will join me in voting for Jim Baldassare and Kate Grochala!
