The Crescent Concert Series, located in Plainfield, continues its 36th season with “Connections,” a Festival of Organists featuring four outstanding and celebrated performers playing music from Buxtehude and Bach to Vierne and Widor. The concert date is Sunday, March 18, at 3:00 pm at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield.
F. Allen Artz, III, will be familiar to many as Artistic Director and Organist at Crescent until his retirement in 2016. He is currently organist and choir director at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sinking Spring, PA. As a recitalist, Mr. Artz has performed in several Midwestern and northeastern states as well as in England. While serving as Associate Director of Music and Organist at Newark’s Catholic Basilica, he had the honor of playing Vespers in the presence of Pope John Paul II and President Bill Clinton. His program at Crescent will feature works by Buxtehude, Bach and Mendelssohn.
Kevin Davis is organist and Choir Master at Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit, New Jersey. He has recorded on the Gothic Label as flutist with the Westminster Handbell Choir. As an organ recitalist, Mr. Davis has performed all over the United States. Davis, an active member of the American Guild of Organists, will perform Toccata, Fugue and Finale by Lawrence Altman, as well as works by Bach.
Marie-Daniele Mercier studied at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris where she was awarded many prizes. In 1971 Mme Mercier was awarded First Prize in Organ and Improvisation. Among her many achievements, she has recorded Marcel Dupre’s Second Symphony for the BBC. Mme. Mercier has served as organist at St. Michael’s Church in Cranford, New Jersey, followed by a fifteen-year tenure as Director of Music and Organist at the Church of St. Vincent DePaul in New York City. Today, she is a freelance organist, performing several times a year in France and in the New York Metropolitan area. Mme. Mercier’s program here at Crescent will feature the French neo-classical composer, Jean Francais and Alexandre Guilmant.
Kathleen Healy-Wedsworth received her Master of Sacred Music degree from Union Theological Seminary. She has served churches in Mt. Vernon, New York, as well as many churches throughout New Jersey. Ms. Healy-Wedsworth’s connection to the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church spans the years from 1970 to 1991 where she remembers her tenure there with “great fondness.” Presently, she continues to be active in the National Presbyterian Church (USA). Among composers featured in her program are Vierne and Widor.
All four organists will be performing on Crescent’s Gilbert Adams Pipe Organ, which was installed in 2002 and has been acclaimed by many for its beauty and its “French sound.”
