'Living History' Presentation on Freedom Quilts and Underground Railroad at Bernards Library This Week

BERNARDS TWP., NJ - As black history month continues, the Bernards Township Library will present a 'living history' program, "The Legend of the Freedom Quilts and the Underground Railroad," this Thursday, Feb. 15.

The presentation  from Trish Chambers Productions will offer the audience a chance to learn about the history, legends and personal stories that make up the rich heritage of the Underground Railroad that enabled slaves to escape to freedom.

Registration is requested for the program, which will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. in program room B on the lower level of the library at 32 S. Maple Ave. in Basking Ridge. Registration may be made online.

The presentation, to be performed in period piece, will explore African traditions and how the use of story cloths documented the history of tribes and set the stage for the slaves to learn the lessons needed for survival during their arduous journey to freedom.

African spirituals and the lessons contained in them will also be discussed.

One family's legend

Using a facsimile of a freedom quilt, the presentation will share one family's legend regarding the use of quilt patterns and the survival lessons associated with them.

BERNARDS TWP., NJ – The first "Rx Mission Drive-in/Drop-Off"  will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Bernards Township Public Works Garage, 277 S. Maple Ave, Basking Ridge. This drop off will allow all Somerset County residents to safely dispose of unwanted or outdated prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.
