BERNARDS TOWNSHIP, NJ -- Jane Costa, longtime principal of Oak Street Elementary School, tendered her retirement as of Aug. 31. The school is one of four K-5 buildings in Bernards Township.

The Bernards Township Board of Education accepted the notice on May 18. Starting July 1, her annual salary is to be $183,192.

In answer to a question from the public, Superintendent Nick Markarian said the district would post the job internally and perform usual hiring procedures.

The board also accepted the resignation of Jenna Hawkswell, the assistant principal at Liberty Corner Elementary School, effective June 30. On May 4 the Caldwell-West Caldwell Board of Education named Hawkswell as principal of its Washington Elementary School with a yearly salary of $137,000, effective July 1.

The Bernards board also accepted the retirement of Mary Ann Guggenheim, a Grade 4 teacher at Mount Prospect School, and the resignation of Gerardo Acevedo, a districtwide information technology technician, both effective June 30.

The board made four hires for Ridge High School, all for the next school year. They are: Steven Horten as a social studies teacher, Stephanie Isaacson as a school psychologist, Julia Koch as a teacher of French, and Jeff Sutherland as a physical education/health teacher.

 Two educational technology assistants were hired: Jheisy Urgilez from July 1 through June 30, 2021, and Lauren Economy from May 25 through June 30, 2021.

A child care leave for Linda Cuccaro, a school counselor at Ridge High School, was granted effective Aug. 25 and returning April 7, 2021.

The board approve two Rutgers University student teacher interns, June Lee and Jack Lamond, in second-semester physics classes at Ridge, as well as Jessica King of The College of New Jersey as a first-semester intern in technology education at William Annin Middle School.
