WEST WINDSOR, NJ -- The William Annin Middle School (WAMS) MATHCOUNTS team won second place at the annual Mercer County Regional MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competition held at Mercer Community College on Feb. 1.
A total of 21 schools from Hunterdon, Mercer and Somerset counties participated in the event. The four-member WAMS team included eigthh-grader Andrew Li, seventh-graders Kevin Jin and Eric Shen, and sixth-grader Evan Fan. Shen also won the best in school award.
Six additional WAMS students competed as individuals – eighth-graders Rohan Dugad, Lauren Lin, Laura Liu, Jennifer Ni, and Rohan Panjwani, and sixth-grader Maya Koukos.
The stated mission of MATHCOUNTS, founded in 1983, is to provide “engaging math programs to U.S. middle school students of all ability levels to build confidence and improve attitudes about math and problem-solving.”
Each year over 250,000 students participate in its programs or use its resources. The annual MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is the most widely recognized nationwide middle school math competition and is comprised of four levels – school, chapter, state, and national. The WAMS team now advances to the state competition to be held on March 14th at Rutgers University.
