BASKING RIDGE, NJ - Nimrit Bagga, Youth Ambassador for the India based non-profit Akshaya Patra Foundation, has raised $7,750 over the past two years.
Bagga, a junior that attends Ridge High School, began by raising $3,700 for the New Jersey Chapter by asking for monetary donations instead of gifts for her 16th birthday. She has since continued her mission to raise funds for the organization dedicated to eliminating student midday hunger in India.
“My involvement with the Akshaya Patra Organization began when a close friend of mine invited me to join her along with family and friends at a gala for the program back in 2017. After sitting and watching many inspiring speeches and videos presented at the gala, I decided to take action and showcase my interest in helping the lives of these children and their families,” said Bagga.
According to the foundation’s website, “The Akshaya Patra Foundation is an NGO in India headquartered in Bengaluru. Our organization strives to eliminate classroom hunger by implementing the Mid-Day Meal Scheme in the government schools and government-aided schools. Akshaya Patra also aims at countering malnutrition and supporting the right to education of socio-economically disadvantaged children.”
Bagga said, “At last year’s gala, there was one particular story that warmed my heart. The child was struggling in school because he didn’t have enough food and support from his family. I know how I feel when I’m hungry at school, I can’t concentrate and focus on my work. After supporting this child for a year, he ended up being the top in his class, with a big dream. It’s an amazing feeling to know that your efforts did make an impact. I see individuals who don’t share the same opportunities as I do and I feel responsible, determined, and motivated to make a difference in their life.”
