Proposal for Conceptual Plan for 94 Units of Senior Citizen Housing on Tuesday's Agenda for Township Committee

BERNARDS TWP., NJ _ A Massachusetts developer is asking the Township Committee to consider a submitted conceptual plan for 94 units of senior citizen housing _ including 67 units of assisted living housing and 27 units for residents who need memory care _ proposed in correspondence listed on the Tuesday night agenda for the Bernards Township Committee.

The developer, LCB Senior Living, said that it is under contract to purchase the property off Mount Airy Road where it would like to build the housing. The correspondence specified that 10 percent of the units would qualify as state-required affordable housing units.

The property does not now permit senior citizen housing, and the developer is asking the township to change its designated property zone to allow the proposal to move forth. The property is a parcel by Old Meeker Road.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, at the main meeting room at 1 Collyer Lane in Basking Ridge. The proposal from the developer is listed early in the meeting.

On Monday, Bernards Mayor John Carpenter said officials had just heard of the proposal and had not yet discussed it before putting the correspondence on the May 15 meeting agenda.

Other agenda items

Other items on the agenda include a request from an attorney representing Verizon asking that the corporation be allowed to restrict public access to The Ridge after a liquor license was transferred to the facility last June.

"Access to the hotel facilities by non-Verizon employees raises the specter of unintended disclosure of sensitive corporate information and certainly imposes a very real chilling effect on the discussions of Verizon corporate policy and information by Verizon employees," says the correspondence, dated May 11. "Verizon’s concern is that its executive functions should not be impeded by a likely weakening of confidentiality should The Ridge’s facilities be opened to the public at all times," the letter continued.

The correspondence from attorney Douglas Watson Lubic requested that Verizon is asking the township to amend its legal requirement for public access to the facility as a result of acquiring the liquor license. Verizon, "which has made every effort to be a good corporate citizen of Bernards Township and has been happy to support many worthy local causes," is requesting the change so that the club can be operated in a "manner that is not detrimental to its business."

Another item on the agenda is the proposed designation of Bernards Township as a "Stigma-Free Community" regarding mental health issues.

"A Stigma-Free Community aims to inspire public interest and open dialogues about stigma, raise awareness of the disease of mental illness and creates a culture wherein residents who have the disease of mental illness feel supported by their community and neighbors and feel free to seek treatment for the disease without fear of stigma," the proposed resolution states.

"Promoting awareness that there can be no health without mental health will break down barriers and encourage residents of all ages to be mindful of their mental health and ask for help when needed," the resolution continues.
