BERNARDS TWP., NJ _ Registration is open for the 30th annual Pleasant Valley Twilight Challenge coming up on Sunday, June 3 at Pleasant Valley Park off Valley Road in Basking Ridge. The popular event combines fun for all ages with a more serious mission: reducing and preventing underage drinking by local young people.

The 5K race is scheduled to begins at 6 p.m. A one-mile health walk is slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.  Kids can also partake in the traditional children’s Lollipop Loop at the conclusion of the 5K. The event will take place near parking lot 2.

This event benefits the Bernards Township Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse and contributes towards substance abuse prevention programs in Bernards Township.

This year the theme will be "Super Hero." The municipal alliance is inviting participants to dress up as their favorite super hero and, "Dash to the finish line." 

Registration is live online at or members of the community can pick up a form at Charter Day or at the Bernards Township Health Department. 

"Please come out and support the Municipal Alliance and all of the amazing programs it supports,” said Community Program Coordinator Kaitlin Cartoccio.

“We are so proud to celebrate the Twilight Challenge’s 30th Anniversary," Cartoccio said.

Along with the theme of super heroes, the event will be a fun evening for all families with local band Mama’s Stew providing live entertainment starting at 4 p.m., along with a variety of events," she said.

The one-mile walk and a Lollipop Loop for children to participate in will feature a "fantastic 5K around our beautiful park," Cartoccio said.

The 5K race will will include two cross country loops around the park. Pre–registration is $25 if received by Friday, June 2, according to the township. The fee on race day is $30. All runners must pick up their numbers on race day between 4:30 and 5:45 p.m.

Walkers can register for the $15 one-mile walk in advance or the day of the event, according to the township. The Lollipop Loop for children begins around 6:45 at the conclusion of the 5K race. Children of all ages are welcome to join in the fun. All runners, walkers, and children are invited to dress in superhero costumes for the events. 

Prizes will be awarded to top overall male and female top three runners in each age group: 14 and under, 15 –19, and then in 10–year increments up to age 80 and over. No duplicate awards will be given. Prizes will also be given for superhero costumes. Awards take place at 7 pm. 

Swag bags will be filled with giveaways from the Municipal Alliance and other local businesses. The bags willl be distributed to participants, as well as a race t-shirt. This year the Alliance is proud to offer timing with chipped timing and markers at the 1-mile, 2-mile, and - mile mark. Timing will be provided by Blue Ridge Timing.

The event is sponsored by the Bernards Township Health Department and the Bernards Township Municipal Alliance Against Substance Abuse.  Funds will go towards supporting initiatives that reduce and prevent underage drinking in the community, including sending high school students to the Lindsey Meyer Teen Institute.
