BEDMINSTER, NJ - This afternoon Karl Rock, Chief of the Bedminster Township Police Department, announced the passing of the township’s Patrol Sergeant AlTerek Patterson.  

“Sergeant Patterson fought a courageous battle against COVID-19 and unexpectedly passed away early this morning,” Chief Rock said in a statement posted on the Department’s Facebook page.

The 38-year-old Patrol Sergeant graduated from the Somerset County Police Academy Recruit Class 35-05 in December 2005 and began his career as a patrolman on January 1, 2006.  He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in October 2014.

“Sergeant Patterson always had a smile on his face and touched the lives of so many residents at their time of need,” he said, “please keep his family, friends, and members of The Bedminster Township Police Department in your thoughts and prayers."

The New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association said in a Tweet, “These are the darkest of days as we work to protect our communities while battling this invisible killer."

The death toll among law enforcement officers in New Jersey is now at five, according to the NJSPBA.
