PHILLIPSBURG, NJ -- Phillipsburg scored on a 3-yard run in the second overtime to hand the Ridge football team its first loss of the season, 34-28, Friday night.
The teams were tied, 21-21, after four quarters. After Phillipsburg (4-0) scored a touchdown with an extra point in its first overtime possession, Ridge answered back to tie it, 28-28. Brendan Bell connected with Jack Perry on a 25-yard TD pass and Jake Beckman kicked the tying PAT to send the game into a second OT.
Ridge (2-1) took a 7-0 lead right out of the gate when Perry caught a TD pass from Bell covering 76 yards on the Red Devils' second snap in the first quarter. Phillipsburg scored two TDs in the second quarter to take a 13-7 halftime lead.
The Stateliners extended their lead to 21-7 on Matt Quetel's 78-yard return of the second-half kickoff before Ridge embarked on a comeback. Bell sneaked in from the 1 to bring the Red Devils back to within 21-14, and Jake Hoffman's 6-yard TD run with 7:12 left in the fourth quarter and Beckman's PAT forged a 21-21 deadlock.
Bell finished 9-for-17 for 183 yards passing as Ridge outgained Phillipsburg, 307-245, from scrimmage.
