BASKING RIDGE, NJ -- The Ridge girls basketball team had already lost to unheralded Phillipsburg in the regular season, and it almost happened again with the stakes much higher Tuesday night.

Ridge, the fourth seed, needed overtime to defeat the Stateliners, 55-50, in the opening round of the Section 2, Group 4 state tournament.

Senior point guard Sophie Beneventine finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Ridge (20-7), which led, 17-10, after one quarter. Phillipsburg (10-16) came back from a four-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

Delaney Donohoe had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Taylor Smith totaled 12 points and five rebounds in the victory, which sent Ridge into a quarterfinal round home game against Westfield Thursday at 7 p.m.
