BRIDGEWATER, NJ -- The Ridge and Bridgewater-Raritan girls soccer teams have played each other three times in the last month.
Ridge defeated Bridgewater in the regular season, Bridgewater beat Ridge in the Somerset County Tournament championship game last week, and then, on Friday, the two teams played each other to a 1-1 tie for 100 minutes of action.
But rules dictate that a way is needed to advance one team to the next round, and Bridgewater-Raritan prevailed, 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout over Ridge in the quarterfinal round of the Section 2, Group 4 tournament Friday.
Maggie Ousouljoglou stepped out from in goal to make what turned out to be the decisive penalty kick in the shootout.
Not only did Ousouljoglou break the 3-3 PK deadlock, she also made a tough save of a Ridge PK in the fourth round to keep the Red Devils from taking the lead.
"We were ready for this game," Ridge head coach Katie Donahue said. "This game was played with the heart of a sectional final. Except for one or two lapses which we'd like to have back, we played very well."
Cammie Wylie, Heather Cortese and Zoey Mitzner converted their penalty kicks for Ridge (10-7-3).
Sophomore Payton Uhrig had scored from the left side of the box with 11:16 left in the first half to give the Red Devils a 1-0 lead. Uhrig played most of the second half and two overtimes despite hurting her leg late in the first half.
"We got on the board against them early," Donahue said. "Payton got behind her player and struck it cleanly and decisively for that goal. She got injured after that and came out for a little while, but she went back in and played through it."
Bridgewater-Raritan had tied the game, 1-1, in the third minute of the second half when Danielle Orecchio scored from out front 15 yards away with an assist by Annie Clapp.
After that, much of the second half was uneventful, but the Panthers survived a couple of close calls by Ridge in the first overtime--one thanks to a spectacular save by Ousouljoglou with 5:15 left on a left-footed strike from Ridge's Ryan Rosevear--and two more near-misses by Ridge in the second OT.
"Ryan's shot was exceptional, but Maggie's save was also exceptional," Donahue said of Rosevear's near-miss in the first OT. "This stings. It's tough for the seniors. I feel badly for them."
Sammi Powers, Heather Cortese, Kaitlyn McQuaid, Bailey Aaron, Megan Becker, Zoey Mitzner, Adriana Giordano, Caroline McEnroe, Cammie Wylie and Meaghan McEnroe are the Ridge seniors who suited up for the final time on Friday.
