ROCKAWAY, NJ -- The Ridge High School girls fencing team made history by winning its first state championship with a 16-11 victory over Montclair in the NJSIAA State Finals at Morris Hills High School Tuesday night.
The Ridge girls continued their dominance this year and finished the 2018-2019 season with a 14-1 record. Following the historic three-weapon sweep at Santelli and District 2 championship, the team was all geared up to bring the trophy home.
Anchored by strong performances by A strip fencers and squad captains Liz Yugov and Diya Kulkarni, who remained undefeated, the team overcame the initial shock of three quick losses. Victories by freshman fencers Elizabeth Chan, Zoe Kim, Lucy Liao and Erica Yang showcased the strength and the promising future of Ridge fencing. Wins by Andrea Tirado and Jillian Yao sealed the victory for Ridge.
Seniors Arianna Minassian and Nastassja Kuznetsova, with two wins, each finished their high school fencing strong.
Ridge coach Glen Pernia credits the team`s success to “talent and teamwork.” For more information on the program, visit ridgehighfencing.com .
