SOMERSET, NJ -- The Bernards ice hockey team came close to pulling off a monumental upset before Ridge hung on to defeat the Mountaineers, 3-2, in overtime in the opening round of the Skyland Cup on Friday.

Sean Leach's goal with 9:31 left in overtime gave the Red Devils (15-4-5) the victory. Ridge trailed, 2-1, before Jamie Zimmerman scored with an assist by Reese Judson with 6:50 left in the third period.

After a scoreless first period, Bernards (3-13-3) took a 1-0 lead in the second period on Tyler Wong's goal. Alejo Woelper and Nick Emmons assisted him. Ridge tied it, 1-1, when Judson scored assisted by Zimmerman with 13:47 left in the second period. Bernards took a 2-1 lead when Woelper scored with an assist from Emmons early in the third period.

Marcus Fabiunke made 23 saves for Ridge, which had defeated Bernards, 14-1, on opening day two months ago.
