BASKING RIDGE, NJ -- Siobhan Devlin, the Ridge High School girls golf coach since the program's inception 10 years ago, has announced her retirement.
In her final season as coach, Devlin oversaw a team that posted a 14-2 record this spring. Ridge came in third in the North State Sectional to qualify for the state Tournament of Champions (the top four teams in each section make the TOC).
Ridge won five TOC titles during Devlin's tenure as head girls golf coach.
"To compete on a daily basis with these powerhouses and to finish 14-2 is a tribute to the 2019 team and how resilient they were," Devlin said. "We lost to Pingry at the Somerset County Tournament by over 30 strokes, only to beat them two weeks later by two strokes during our home match."
Rachel McCormick of Ridge earned All-Skyland Conference First Team honors, and Emily Wang and Katherine Wang each made second-team all-conference from Ridge. Ann Kang and Ella Blank also turned in fine efforts for the Red Devils' golf team this spring.
Devlin reflected on a career that included 13 years, from 1991-2003, as Ridge's field hockey coach. Her field hockey teams compiled a record of 159-75-27, with four Somerset County championships and three conference championships. Ridge reached the sectional finals three times under Devlin.
"I have been blessed to have been given the privilege of pioneering this program (2009) by the Board of Education and Athletic Director, Rich Shello," said Devlin, a 2019 inductee into the New Jersey State Coaches' Association (NJSCA) Hall of Fame. "Together with every player who has teed it up for Ridge and her parents, we have had a great deal of success, but more importantly developed fond and life-lasting memories.
"I am most proud of being able to use the sport of golf to help shape such strong, independent, talented and academically superior young women who are excelling in the next chapter of their lives and of the everlasting relationships that are ongoing with the many alumni who will always be part of the Ridge girls golfing family.
"I have coached at Ridge since the Fall of 1987; I don’t know where the time went, but it’s been a blast."
