BASKING RIDGE, NJ -- The Ridge football team has been seeded second for the Section 2, Group 5 playoffs that will begin Friday night with a home game against seventh-seeded Union City of Hudson County.

The Red Devils (7-1) and Union City (5-4) have something in common--both teams lost in the 2018 post-season on the road at eventual state champion Piscataway--Ridge in the second round and then Union City in the sectional final.

Ridge enters the game on a five-game winning streak. Starting fullback/linebacker Christian Sweeney has missed the last six quarters with a lower leg injury. It was initially feared Sweeney might have a fracture, but that was not the case, and although he sat out Ridge's 14-7 road victory over Linden last Friday, his status for the first playoff game currently is probable.

If Ridge defeats Union City, the Red Devils would host either Clifton or Hackensack in the second round the following weekend. Undefeated Union is the top seed in the section.
