ROCKAWAY, NJ -- The Ridge High School girls fencing team won its second straight state championship last week over Montgomery.
The Ridge fencing teams both earned their spots in the championship matches last week at Morris Hills High School. On the line were state titles for both teams.
Ridge defeated Montgomery, 18-9, in the girls' final. Starting it off in the first round, the sabres of Andrea Tirado, Zoe Kim, and Ishita Goel each claimed victory. The foils were next with three wins from Liz Yugov, Lucy Liao, and Madison Clowes. The epee squad of Diya Kulkarni, Jillian Yao, and Elizabeth Chan went two for three. The same crew added 6 more victories in the second round with Kim and Goel winning in sabre, Yugov in foil, and Yao, Chan, and Kulkarni each winning tight bouts in epee. In the third round the girls added to the total with wins from Andrea Tirado and Zoe Kim in sabre, Liz Yugov in foil and Jordan Guzzi in epee.
The boys squad faced off against Newark Academy in their title match, but came up short with a final score of 12-15. Fencing sabre was Casper Mika, Brock Martynowski, and Stephen Lin. Fencing foil was Eric Liu, Lawrence Han, and Ryan Shadpoor. Fencing epee was Allen Marakov, Clark Kokenge, and Eric Wang.
