BRIDGEWATER, NJ -- Hillsborough scored three runs in the first inning and went on to an 8-1 softball victory over Ridge in the championship game of the Somerset County Tournament Friday night at the Torpey Complex.
Hillsborough led, 3-0, after one inning and held a 6-0 lead by the end of two innings. But Ridge threatened in each of its first two times up.
The Red Devils (12-7) put runners on the corners in the first inning on singles by Annabelle Hamilton and Sophia Berger, and then they loaded the bases in the second inning. But Hillsborough (12-4) was able to escape unscored upon in both frames.
In fact, Ridge did not break through and avert the shutout until the seventh inning. Hamilton, who went 4-for-4 in the loss, doubled and scored on an RBI double by Allegra DeCandia, who was 2-for-3. Lauren Lusardi also had two hits for Ridge.
Ridge had defeated Hillsborough, 8-4, early in the regular season. Ridge was 7-16 in 2016, 12-12 in 2017, then 15-8 last season, when the Red Devils lost to Hillsborough in the semifinal round of the county tournament.
