Bayonne Bridge to Close Two Times This Weekend

BAYONNE, NJ – The Bayonne Bridge will close and reopen two different times this weekend as work continues on the Bayonne Bridge Navigation Clearance Project.

The crossing will close 11:59 p.m. Friday, June 10 and reopen 8 a.m. Saturday, June 11. It will close again 11:59 p.m. Saturday and reopen 8 a.m. Sunday, June 12.

“These closures are necessary to accommodate ongoing construction work on the ‘Raise the Roadway’ project,” a spokesperson said. “They were scheduled in conjunction with other regional agencies to minimize traffic impacts.”

During the week, bridge is closed Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Mondays through Thursdays from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. On some weekdays, the Bayonne Bridge opens a half hour earlier at 4:30 a.m. to provide an auxiliary route for drivers who cannot use the Goethals Bridge because of 4:30 to 5 a.m. traffic holds there.

The Bayonne Bridge project is being undertaken to raise the span’s roadway 64 feet to 215 feet. This will allow larger vessels expected from the Panama Canal in the future to pass under the bridge.
