As part of its ongoing effort to provide a full spectrum of health care services to the community, Bayonne Medical Center has opened a new outpatient psychiatry office to better serve patients.

The new office, which is located on the ground floor of the hospital, is staffed by a highly-qualified psychiatrist who will see new adult patients from the community, as well as provide follow-up care for BMC Emergency Department patients and inpatient discharges.

Initially, the office will be open Monday and Friday, from 9 a.m. to noon, with plans for expanded hours in the coming months. The office will provide medication management for adult population with mood spectrum disorders and anxiety spectrum disorders, as well as psychotic spectrum disorders.

“Bayonne currently lacks community psychiatrists to serve and treat the increasing volume of behavioral health disorders locally, and this is an initiative by the hospital to provide that resource for adults with psychiatric illnesses,” said Dr. Vijayant Singh, Bayonne Medical Center Chief Hospital Executive. “We recognize the importance of this type of program and will be working with the physician community to help them educate their patients on signs and symptoms of mental health disorders and the treatment resources that are available.”

According to the National Institute for Mental Health, one in every five adults in the United States, or approximately 43 million Americans, have a mental health condition. Additionally, 56 percent of American adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment.

“This program is meant to be a resource for the community as well as for our emergency room patients,” said Dr. Olga Abduakhadov, Medical Director for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Bayonne Medical Center. “This is part of our philosophy of a continuum of care and is a way to ensure that our patients receive a full-range mental health services and support.”

For more information, please call Bayonne Medical Center at (201) 858-5000 and ask for the Psychiatry Office. All emergency mental health situations should still be handled through the hospital’s Emergency Department.
