Bayonne Police and Fire Department Saves Kayaking Couple in Newark Bay

BAYONNE, NJ – Two kayakers were stranded in Newark Bay near 16th Street Park on Wednesday night leading to a Bayonne Fire Department water rescue.

According to police, the couple was reported missing around 10 p.m. after losing contact with the man’s mother.

The woman said she last heard from her son at 7:50 p.m. when he told her they were making their way back to shore near 16th Street Park,

Once notified, the Bayonne Fire Department dispatched their rescue boat to the area to conduct a search.  According to the report, police officers made contact with the couple after 10 p.m. via cell phone. The stranded couple said their kayak became “lodged on one of the barges located just west of the 16th Street Park.

The couple said they “climbed onto a wooden platform next to the barge” for safety purposes.

The report said the Bayonne Fire Department Marine Unit located the couple and returned them safely to shore uninjured.

The N.J. State Police Marine Division, U.S. Coast Guard, North Hudson Regional Task Force and the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department assisted with the search and rescue.
