BAYONNE, NJ – City residents looking for their dose of local high school pigskin action don’t have to wait any longer, as the Bayonne High School Bees kick off their season 7 p.m. tonight against perennial rival North Bergen at Don Ahern Veterans Memorial Stadium in Bayonne.

The Marist Royal Knights begin their quest for a winning season as well this weekend, with a road game at Newark Collegiate tomorrow at 1 p.m.

For the Bees it’s about bettering last year’s 4-6 record, under new head coach Jason Acerra. Introduced during the spring by the school administration, Bayonne Athletic Director John Calcaterra touted Acerra’s “great deal of football knowledge and coaching experience.”

For Marist’s football program, it’s about getting back to respectability. The Royal Knights were 0-9 in 2015, and second-year coach Bob Nevith believes that sticking with the basics and first running successful plays will result in the team winning games.

The balance of the Fighting Bee schedule is: at Clifton on Sept. 16, Memorial on Sept. 23, Dickinson on Sept. 30, Kearny on Oct. 7, at East Side on Oct. 14, Union City on Oct. 22, at Bloomfield on Oct. 28, and Livingston on Nov. 4.

The rest of the Royal Knight games are: Snyder on Sept. 16, at Morris Catholic on Sept. 24, St. Anthony on Oct. 1, Hudson Catholic on Oct. 8, Immaculate Conception on Oct. 14, at Manville on Oct. 21, Ferris on Oct. 29, and at Montclair Kimberley on Nov. 5.
