Individuals who triumphed over cancer were honored by CarePoint Health on Saturday, June 23rd at “Colors of Courage, Embracing Life & Each Other,” the health system’s first-ever Cancer Survivors Day.

The event, which was held at Christ Hospital, honored patients treated at Christ Hospital or Hoboken University Medical Center.

About 100 individuals, including 60 people who were cancer survivors and their guests, attended the celebration.  A similar event is being held Saturday, June 30th at Bayonne Medical Center.

The cancer programs at Christ Hospital and Bayonne Medical Center are the only two cancer programs in Hudson County accredited by the American College of Surgeons.

“We recognize the journey that each and every cancer survivor has made, and wanted them to know we are with them on that journey and provide a day where they could be honored and celebrated,” said Peter Daniels, Chief Operating Officer of CarePoint Health.  “The event was full of emotion with survivors coming together, sharing their stories and providing support for one another.  It was truly a special day that we hope grows in the years to come.”

Three of the health care professionals who spoke at the event are also cancer survivors; Lauren Myler, Christ Hospital Psychosocial Service Coordinator; Shakilla Sitaram, a Christ Hospital Oncology Department registered nurse; and Sharon Daughtry-Simon, the keynote speaker from the Susan G. Komen cancer foundation.

Assemblywoman Angela V. McKnight, whose district includes a portion of Jersey City and Bayonne, also spoke and honored the survivors. Peter Daniels, CarePoint Executive Vice President and System Chief Operating Officer, also addressed the crowd. Ann Logan, PhD, RN, Chief Operating Officer of Hoboken University Medical Center, gave the closing remarks.

In addition to the formal program, attendees were able to share with each other their experiences of fighting cancer. They were also treated to lunch at the event.

CarePoint’s celebration was held in coordination with national Cancer Survivors Day, observed this year on June 3. In the United States, more than 15 million people are alive today after being diagnosed with cancer.
