Christ Hospital’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tucker Woods was honored during the 2018 Hudson County Pride Month Kick Off & Community Awards ceremony for his leadership in CarePoint Health’s partnership with Hudson Pride Center to expand healthcare access to the LGBTQ+ community.

The award ceremony took place on Thursday, August 2nd in partnership with Hudson Pride Center and Hudson County Cultural Affairs/Tourism Development.

The Evolution Award honors individuals on the cutting edge of advocacy and activism within the LGBTQ+ community who represent the change and growth needed to foster a future with equality, empathy, and above all, provide LBGTQ individuals a sense of place in the world.

“When considering everything we have accomplished so far, and what we will continue to do, it touches my heart to receive this award because we are making a difference — we are improving the lives and health of our LGBT patients,” said Dr. Woods.  “This truly is an evolution, as we have just scratched the surface. Going forward, we will continue to expand our medical care and treatment for this vital community. We are all in this for the long haul, and I am excited to see what else we can accomplish — together.”

In March, CarePoint Health partnered with Hudson Pride Center – New Jersey’s largest LGBTQ+ full-service center – to expand health care services to the LGBTQ+ community.  Dr. Woods was the person spearheading much of the work, recognizing that the LGBT community has unique healthcare issues, Dr. Woods felt that it was important to help create the necessary healthcare infrastructure so that the thousands of LGBT people living in Hudson County would have full access to the medical services needed and not have to leave New Jersey to get that care.

Since the partnership began, a new CarePoint employee group called CarePoint Pride was formed, medical staff are receiving Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis training (PrEP), medical and behavioral health staff have worked with transgendered youth (at a Trans Camp in June), and work has begun with hospital staff to help promote the partnership between Hudson Pride and CarePoint Health.

“Dr. Woods has truly put his heart and commitment into this partnership and into developing a comprehensive program to expand healthcare access for LGBTQ+ individuals,” said Hudson Pride’s CEO Michael Billy. “We know that while much has already been accomplished, together we will continue to change the lives of so many people by making sure they have quality healthcare right here in Hudson County.”

In addition to Dr. Woods, CarePoint Health congratulated the other Evolution Award recipients; Sergeant Major Jennifer Marie Long and Tina Nacrelli, as well as Jonathan Lucas, who took home The Pride of Hudson Award.

While PRIDE Month has been celebrated in Jersey City for 18 years each August, this is the first Hudson County PRIDE month celebration.  There are several PRIDE events scheduled throughout the county. Jersey City Pride Month will wrap up on Saturday August 25th with the 18th annual Jersey City LGBT Pride Festival. For a full list of events click here.
