BAYONNE, NJ - Representatives of BMC Hospital LLC, the proposed buyers of the Bayonne Medical Center, said the facility will be a new name: Bayonne Hospital. “But since many of you still called it that it isn’t much of a change,” said co-owner Gregg Rock, during an event held on the hospital’s front lawn Tuesday.
BMC Hospital LLC consists of four investors who said they specialize in improving healthcare in New York and New Jersey, focusing on convenient patient-centered service, provided by top doctors and nurses, with state-of-the-art technology and facilities.
Following those priorities, the BMC Hospital LLC strategy is to continue to expand the hospital’s broad healthcare services, provided by more physicians from throughout the region, with more specialties. These expanded services will more fully utilize hospital capacity while maintaining the hospital as the traditional healthcare centerpiece of the community, they say.
CarePoint Health, which currently owns the Bayonne facility, had been seeking an operator since late last year when it announced that it had plans to sell its other two facilities, Christ Hospital in Jersey City, and Hoboken University Medical Center, to RWJBarnabas Health.
These sales became complicated when Avery Eisenreich, owner of Alaris Health, purchased the land the hospital stands on, as well as a portion of the Hoboken property. Eisenreich also owns a portion of Christ Hospital.
The owners of CarePoint originally sold off the land to a Texas real estate firm a decade ago in an apparent effort to improve cash flow to expand the hospital chain’s operations.
In order to assure that the Bayonne facility would continue to operate as a hospital, the City of Bayonne created Municipal Hospital Authority and then rezoned the property for exclusive hospital use.
Eisenreich has since filed suit against the city to restore the original zoning. The city has also moved ahead with plans that could potentially take the property through eminent domain and recently approved a measure to reach an agreement with the Hudson County Improvement Authority that could lead to the takeover of the property.
The new owners of Bayonne Hospital could not say just when they expected to take over but said it would be soon. BMC has a history of rescuing financially distressed medical facilities.
Wayne Hatami, president of BMC Hospital LLC, said, “Bayonne Hospital is a vital part of this community.”
