Three Injured at Bayonne Work Site Explosion

BAYONNE, NJ - A 9 a.m. explosion at a Bayonne worksite on Wednesday, March 30 has sent three people to local hospitals, two with serious injuries, police said.

The explosion was reported at East 40th Street and Chosin Few Way, where a new gas line was being installed, according to a statement issued by Capt. Janine Foy of the Bayonne Police Department.

“The new gas line was being tested with pressurized air when the line failed, causing the reported explosion,” Foy said. “No gas was in the line at the time, and there is no danger of any gas leak or additional risk.”

Three individuals from the worksite were injured, according to Foy. Two were transported to the Jersey City Medical Center with serious injuries. One was transported to Bayonne Medical Center with minor injuries. In addition, two Bayonne police officers at the worksite when the explosion occurred were being treated at BMC as a precaution.

The Bayonne Fire Department and Public Service Electric & Gas responded to the scene. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified and will be responding, Foy said.
