Mayor Jimmy Davis announced that the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and its contractors have provided the City of Bayonne with updated information about construction in and around the Turnpike’s 14 A interchange. They also provided information about other Turnpike construction activity in the area.
In the toll plaza itself, concrete paving work took place in toll lanes 8, 9, and 10 during the weekend of April 7. At the conclusion of the weekend, toll lanes 8, 9, and 10 were reopened. Renovation work is continuing at the existing toll plaza building.
At the northern end of Avenue E near the traffic roundabout, deep foundation drilling is continuing for new bridge piers (columns). New pier construction is continuing. During the second week of April, a drilled shaft reinforcement cage will be delivered and installed.
In the ramp area east of Route 440, road construction is continuing on the new connector ramps. During the week of April 10, asphalt paving will take place on the new ramp to southbound Route 440, between Port Jersey Boulevard and Route 440.
For the connector bridge between the toll plaza and Port Jersey Boulevard, new bridge steel installation will take place during the weekend of May 5. The installation will take place over the Light Rail and the Conrail freight lines. The back-up date for the installation is the weekend of May 12. During the weekend construction activity in May, Light Rail service between 34th Street in Bayonne and Danforth Avenue in Jersey City will be handled by NJ Transit buses.
In the area around the intersection of Route 440 and Pulaski Street, roadway construction is continuing for the new jughandle ramp. Median construction is also moving ahead. Ground improvement operations will continue in the coming weeks.
The ramps between the toll plaza and the Hudson County Extension will be resurfaced at a point to be announced in 2017.
