BAYONNE, NJ- The Bayonne Board of Education met in a closed-door session on Wednesday to fill the vacancy left by outgoing business administrator Leo Smith, who announced his retirement in late June.

With Smith’s term reaching its end on August 31, the BOE named Thomas Fogu as acting business administrator. Fogu, who has worked within Bayonne’s school district for over twenty years, currently serving director of instructional technology and formerly holding the position of principal at Henry E. Harris Elementary, assumes the role after the BOE voted against granting the position to Dr. Michael Pierson, the current athletic director.

Bayonne’s Interim Superintendent Michael Wanko had initially supported granting the role to Pierson. However, following the vote of 7-2 against that option, the board examined alternatives and agreed upon Fogu. When asked about the selection process, Wanko and Fogu declined to respond.

While it is currently unclear how long Fogu will serve as acting business administrator, Board Trustee Christopher Munoz, who is chairman of the finance committee, told TAPInto Bayonne, “The board has reopened the selection process for an interim and permanent BA search.”

Trustee Munoz—who had initially voted in favor of Pierson—said, “I would like to thank Mr. Fogu for filling in this position as we are in a period of transition. He is a great asset to the school district and I’m sure it will be a pleasure working with him.”
