BAYONNE, NJ - Three college bound members of the Bayonne High School Class of 2020 have been announced as this year's recipients of the William Gawor Perpetual Scholarship, Bayonne School District Superintendent John Niesz and Bayonne High School Principal Richard Bacarella announced Wednesday.

According to District officials, Isabella Attisano, Arsh Banerjee, and Safa Elzanfali will receive the scholarship named after and bequeathed by William Gawor, a Bayonne native, and proud graduate of Bayonne High School in 1937 who graciously donated scholarship funds for students who pursue majors in STEM fields. 

The scholarships, worth up to $15,000 for each student, were awarded based on performance in a variety of areas such as academic merit, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities in STEM clubs, along with community and school participation.

Isabella Attisano, who said she chose to explore computer science and its effect on the healthcare industry will be attending Villanova University - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences where she plans to major in Computer Science.  

Arsh Banerjee, the Class of 2020 Valedictorian, will be attending Princeton University with a concentration in Computer Science in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. “In the future, I would like to pursue a career in the field of artificial intelligence and work towards innovating this technology,” Arsh said.

The third honoree, Safa Elzanfali, will be attending the University of Pennsylvania following a pre-medical track with a major in Biology after which she hopes to have a career in medicine to help combat global health concerns.  

Also offering her thanks for the opportunities bestowed on the students was Maria Valado, President of the Bayonne Board of Education, who thanked Stanley Genga and the Gawor Estate for providing the wonderful opportunity for our 2020 graduates.
