BAYONNE, NJ - The Bayonne Public Library is being targeted for a major upgrade with the help of a $2 million NJ Library Construction Bond grant.
According to City Law Director Jay Coffey, under the plan the city would use a combination of municipal bonds and library funds to cover $1 million of the total $3 million project.
Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 for the construction of the library building in 1903, then another $30,000 for its expansion in 1913. Another expansion was done in 1930 at the cost of $300,000.
A fire gutted the library in 1959 doing extensive damage. Restoration cost $1.25 million.
