BAYONNE, NJ - For the fourth year in a row the Third Ward celebrated its own tree-lighting event, thanks to Councilman Gary LaPelusa
“For a long time, I went to tree lightings in other parts of the city,” LaPelusa said as hundreds of people crowded into Dr. David G. Morris Park on Broadway near 47th Street for the annual festivities on December 5. “It seemed to me that the Third Ward was neglected, and residents here should have something of our own. They shouldn’t have to travel to other parts of the city.”
The Third Ward is comprised of the uptown section of Bayonne with the northern boundary bordering Jersey City.
While in the past, many Third Ward events have been sponsored by the Gary LaPelusa Civic Association, the annual Christmas event is paid for by LaPelusa himself.
“I even bought the tree,” he said.
The event featured its own Third Ward Santa who sat on a throne near the park gate greeting kids as they came and later listened to their requests for gifts for Christmas.
The Horace Mann Ensemble, the Horace Mann School Choir, and the Bayonne High School Bee Sharps all performed adding to the festive nature of the celebration.
“We have an awesome group of people – including teachers – all of whom work together,” Michele Green, music director of choir and jazz ensemble that includes almost 60 kids in fifth through eighth grades, said.
The student singers will also perform two concerts at Horace Mann School on Dec. 18, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Green added.
