BAYONNE, NJ - Mayor Jimmy Davis offered his gratitude to Bayonne residents who have abided by social distancing measures and supported efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Acknowledging that the past five weeks have been difficult, horrific, and burdensome, Davis said that “everything we’ve done, everything we’ve gone through, and everything we’ve sacrificed is working,” adding that projections of infections rates and deaths across the US have dropped significantly.

The reason for that locally, Davis said, is the “incredible level of compliance” across the city. “We’ve all done our best, our commitment is something to which all other cities should aspire.”

“This city is my life. Seeing how we all come together makes me incredibly happy to be from Bayonne,” Davis concluded. “In our typical fashion we looked the challenge in the eye and dealt with it.”

According to city officials 662 Bayonne residents have tested positive for coronavirus, with 106 recovered. 38 residents have died from the respiratory illness.
