BAYONNE, NJ - In what may eventually preserve Bayonne Medical Center as an acute care facility, CarePoint Health and a newly founded entity called BMC Hospital LLC signed a letter of intent that would transfer ownership of the facility in Bayonne.
“I welcome the news that CarePoint-Bayonne has signed a Letter of Interest with a prospective purchaser of Bayonne Medical Center. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven what I always knew – Bayonne needs a full-service acute care hospital,” said Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis who has vowed to use every resource at his disposal to maintain a full service hospital in the city. “I am committed to working with all parties to get a deal done. I want to thank my friend, Assemblyman Chiaravalloti for his efforts to bring people together and save the hospital.”
“This is a bright spot during what are such dark times for our health care workers. There are still several hurdles, especially the real estate question, but I am excited about the progress made to preserve our hospital. Despite the current pandemic, Mayor Davis has shown incredible leadership in working toward a deal to save the hospital,” said Assemblyman Nicholas A. Chiaravalloti.
“The transaction is contingent on approvals from the Department of Health, and either a simultaneous purchase of the real estate by an affiliated entity or the City of Bayonne and/or Hudson County Improvement Authority exercising its right to eminent domain related to the Hospital real estate,” said CarePoint in a release issued this week. “We understand that the City of Bayonne and the Hudson County Improvement Authority are discussing the appropriate steps related to eminent domain under their existing authority. In parallel, the parties expect to sign a definitive agreement within 45 days. Under the terms of the LOI, the services and resources for Bayonne Medical Center as a full-service provider of acute health care services for the City of Bayonne and the surrounding communities will be enhanced.”
The release went on to say that the executives of BMC Hospital LLC collectively have over 50 years of experience operating healthcare facilities, including turning around and successfully operating multiple ambulatory surgery centers in New Jersey, and several others in New York. They expressed excitement about the future of Bayonne Medical Center under their leadership, and their plan to expand the hospital’s services and deliver world-class healthcare care in Bayonne.
“Bayonne is a vibrant, growing community with a great history that the Bayonne Medical Center has always been part of, and should continue to be into the future. We look forward to making sure that happens for the citizens, patients, doctors, nurses and others to whom the hospital is so important,” the release said.
