BAYONNE, NJ - A 12-year-old Bayonne resident faces charges of his own after an investigation into an alleged robbery and assault appeared to show that the incident did not happen the way the child told police, a police statement said Thursday.

On May 1, as previously reported, the youth told law enforcement officers that he was a victim in the attack that he claimed occurred at Stephen R. Gregg Park between 6:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

According to Lt. Eric Amato, the Bayonne Police Department Juvenile Aid Bureau immediately initiated a thorough investigation that included locating and studying lengthy surveillance footage from numerous cameras in the area that may have captured the incident.

The investigation and review of surveillance footage led to the discovery that the incident did not happen and that the reported injuries were, in fact, a result of an unrelated incident that had occurred on a prior date, Amato's statement said.

The juvenile was charged with False Reports to Law Enforcement and the matter has been referred to Juvenile Court.
