BAYONNE, NJ - A 27-year old Hoboken man faces a number of charges following an incident at Walmart that led to a member of the Bayonne Police Department being stuck by a hupodermic syringe on Tuesday.
According to Lt. Eric Amato, police were called to the store at approximately 6:27 a.m. on a report of a fight. Once on scene responding officers were told that the suspect, Matthew Ricciardi, had benn observed shoplifting and was detained by store security.
It was at this point, the report states, that Ricciardi is said to have become combative, both physically and verbally, assaulting one of the security officers in an attempt to flee.
Unable to exit the office through the door, according to the report, Ricciardi climbed on top of the office desk, entering the crawl space between the ceiling and the roof.
While officers were removing, Ricciardi to place him under arrest one of them was stuck with the needle, causing him to seek medical treatment at Bayonne Medical Center.
A further search of Ricciardi led to the recovery of 2 glassine packets of suspected heroin.
Ricciardi was transported to Hudson County Jail.
