BAYONNE, NJ - Residents of a 16 unit apartment building at 674 Ave A were awakened at 5:17 a.m. by a fire in a pizzeria located on the ground floor.

Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke and fire in the restaurant and immediately went to work to battle the flames while other crews evacuated the building. 

Due to the quick work of firefighters, they were able to keep the fire from spreading into the upper floors.

Fire Chief Keith Weaver reported that the fire was declared under control in about 30 minutes and no injures were reported and that the “quick and professional work of the responders as outstanding.”

The Building Department responded and worked with Bayonne OEM to return all the temporarily displaced occupants of the building while the Bayonne DPW was also on scene throughout the incident spreading salt as the freezing conditions created ice on roads and sidewalks.
