BAYONNE, NJ - Heavy smoke and flames forced residents of a 50-unit apartment building into the street Thursday morning.

According to Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver first responders were called to 812 Avenue C at approximately 10:48 a.m. on reports of fire coming from the walls in a fifth floor apartment.

Firefighters and police officers immediately evacuated the 36th Street building, his crews, Weaver said, finding that the fire had started in the walls and was making its way to the attic area before firefighters extinguished it using two handlines.
