BAYONNE, NJ - A 30-year-old Maplewoood man was arrested Thursday after attempting to flee police, first in the car he was operating, and then on foot.

According to Capt. Eric Amato the incident began after 12:30 a.m. when officers on patrol observed the suspect, later identified as Hakeem O. Gayle, operating his vehicle at a high rate of speed in the area of 51st Street and Broadway. 

After stopping the vehicle, the officers attempted to approach the car in the area fo 49th Street and Avenue E, at which point Gayle is said to have sped off initiating the pursuit. Gayle lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fire hydrant on the corner of 48th Street and Broadway then into the side of the Stat Medical Center building at 989 Broadway.

At this point police reported Gayle exited the vehicle leading officers on a foot chase that ended when officers intercepted him on West 47th Street. 

An on scene investigation led to the discovery of a fraudulent NY Driver's License and six fraudulent Visa credit/debit cards bearing various identities. Gayle, who was arrested, was also found to be wanted on four warrants, one each out of Elizabeth and Maplewood and two out of Union.

Gayle was treated for a minor injury to his lip that he sustained during the crash before being transferred to Hudson County Jail where he faces several charges.
