BAYONNE, NJ - When flames engulfed 247 Broadway on Thursday in a fire that eventually displaced 22 residents, the occupants at home were lucky to escape with even the clothes on their backs.
For one family, having to make their way out with only one of their cats, while leaving the other two behind, was a heartbreaking decision.
With the building destroyed, and no sign of the beloved pets, the sad reality set in that they were likely lost in the inferno.
On Friday crews began to demolish the unsafe structure. During the work crews have been able recover some personal items left behind and the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management has been working to get these items back to their owners.
That work led to a welcome surprise on Saturday when the missing cats climbed out of the rubble, appearing unharmed. Bayonne police and firefighters were called to the scene and the death defying felines were rescued, a happy reunion between the pets and their people taking place immediately after.
