BAYONNE, NJ - Members of the Bayonne Fire Department responded to an industrial accident at IMTT shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Upon arrival firefighters were met by IMTT fire crews already responding to a discharge of sodium hyrdoxide, at the site located at the foot of Commerce Street. According to an internet search the chemical is one that is often associated with the production of paper, soap, and detergents, and can be used as a drain cleaner.
Bayonne Deputy Fire Chief Stephen Peterson told TAPinto Bayonne that five works were treated for chemical burns on the scene and later transported to area hospitals. No further update on their conditions was available.
Headquartered in New Orleans, International-Matex Tank Terminals (IMTT) is, according to their website, “an industry leader in the handling and storage of bulk liquid products through its ownership and operation of 19 terminals throughout North America.”
