BAYONNE, NJ - A Bayonne woman is dead after a fire burned through a 16th Street home on Sunday.

According to Deputy Fire Chief William Bartos, members of the Bayonne Fire Department were called to the home at approximately 6:15 p.m. and immediately confronted with heavy fire and smoke conditions in the two-story wood structure.

While two of the home’s occupants were removed from the building and transported to the Bayonne Medical Center by McCabe Ambulance, an occupant trapped on the first floor was removed by firefighters and later pronounced deceased.

Bartos credited the firefighters that brought the fire under control in about 45 minutes and for their “quick and professional” response that kept the fire from spreading to additional structures on the block where homes are located close to each other.
